(NEW FRONTIER NEWS) – The FDA announced on Friday that genetically modified salmon, called AquAdvantage salmon, will soon be able to be imported from Canada after a 2016 ban was lifted over labeling issues.

The salmon was banned by Congress over issues about labeling that clearly marked the fish as genetically modified.

This was lead by both Alaskan senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan who want all genetically modified salmon to be labeled as “genetically engineered” or “GE”.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb criticized the 2016 ban, saying the agency “no longer has the authority to issue labeling guidance.”

“However, the FDA believes this Congressional mandate has been satisfied by the USDA’s issuance of final regulations implementing that law in late 2018 because the law and regulations require that human food containing GE salmon bear labeling indicating that it is bioengineered,” Gottlieb said.

The AquAdvantage salmon was first approved by the FDA as safe for human consumption in 2015 after a lengthy 20-year review. FDA in its approval said that the salmon was not biologically different from non-genetically engineered salmon and no adverse health effects were found.

AquAdvantage salmon is engineered to have a growth hormone found in Chinook Salmon and combined it with ocean pout which was then added to Atlantic salmon.

The pros of the AquAdvanage is that it can be grown year-round and grow twice as fast with less food required then non-genetically engineered fish.

With the ban lifted AquaAdvantage plans to import fish eggs from its Canadian facilities and grow fish at its Indiana production facility, which could produce up to 1,300 metric tons of fish a year.

If no interruptions occur, the company expects its fish to show up on the market by 2020.

The Salmon is currently the first and only animal to have been approved by the FDA for human consumption.
